Looking back a few years, as we talked about Tacoma’s future, did any of you predict that day spas and tanning beds would be a fundamental part of Tacoma’s new downtown experience? I didn’t. So, we have another one coming. Urban Tanning Spa put up their sign on 711 Pacific Avenue right next to the Matador last week. We had heard that they are renovating a fairly large space – pouring in a new floor, all new plumbing and electrical, ripping out the 20’ ceiling and building out from nothing. Impressive… particularly for a tanning salon. But now we can get even more excited because they have a construction slideshow on their website.
The last tenant to fill the building with this tanning spa and the Matador is rumored to be a realtor representing a nearby condo project. No other details have come out yet – at least that I’ve heard.
(Thank you, Erik)

It is very interesting that this tanning salon is going in at this location. I wonder if they are going after office workers or residents? To me, someone who enjoys a tanning bed every so often, going to the tanning salon is about ease of use. Park, get in, and get out. That area might not be so easy to find parking in the day time.
A better location might have been near the UWT. That part of Downtown is more geared towards younger people that use tanning beds more.
Also most new construction condos/apartments have free tanning beds.
So who are they they going after? Club goers? Get a tan between beers!
Maybe the low-income residents?

Mainly office workers and visitors. Not very people live down here yet.

The downtown salons are springing up everywhere including down by UWT, Sheraton Hotel, Marriott Hotel, Pacific Avenue, side streets, Court D and numerous places in between.
