Twokoi to Open in September (24. August 2006, 07:16 by Derek Young) ~ Sake! Sake!

According to the Weekly Volcano’s Spew, Twokoi is set for a grand opening in mid-September with silent openings on September 8th and 10th. Twokoi is a Japanese restaurant located on the first floor of the historic Carlton Hotel building near UWT and the Convention Center.

We can’t wait to try it out.

You can get a peak at the progress by going through the shared entrance to Tacoma Art Supply.

Looks very cool and they are almost done. Now we have yet another reason to cross the plaza.

This is great news! After being critical of the performing arts scene in Tacoma earlier this week, I’m very happy to be able to give T-town the credit it deserves in the area of Japanese food. Sushi Tama, Gari of Sushi, Fujiya, and now Twokoi (“two koi”?) mean that this situation is shaping up nicely.

While on the topic of Japanese food and sushi…

I was wondering if Tacoma has any Conveyor Belt sushi places?
I was in Issaquah last night and went to iSushi (www.ishushiwa.com ) . It was pretty cool. A huge conveyor belt takes hundreds of color coded plates around the place. Each plate has about 4 rolls and each color is a differnt price from $1.75-$3.25. Each color had tons of differnt kinds to choice from. At the end they count your plates and colors and give you the bill.

I thought a place like that would do great down here. It was fast, fun, and cheap.

Speaking of conveyor belt sushi:

A former dot-comer opened Blue C Sushi “up North” a few years ago. Very cool place. Sushi Land is also well represented.

Sushi Land – “up North” AND “down South” – would fit in perfectly in Tacoma: they have fluorescent lighting. While Blue C is a bit more upscale, “Would you like a martini to go with that unagi?

Maybe in 20 years when UWT finally gets built up and Tacoma has a large college population, we will see more variety and quality in our eateries.

...sigh…

I think we’re well on our way…

But before we have more sushi here, transported via conveyor belts, I would like to see at least one tapas place and where’s my dim sum?

While we’re at it, how about a upscale Greek restaurant like the type they have a few of in Capital Hill, complete with retsina, the Greek wine of the Gods?

Sigh…

Excellent! Two Koi has a wonderful environment, creative and delicious food, and great drinks. While our server was in training and still learning, we could see that the other staff were already very skilled and menu aware.

My favorite dish, remember this is quality-not quantity, was the salmon carpaccio simply served on decorative clear glass. No frills here, just amazing thin strips of salmon in a citrus-onion(?) marinade that left you wanting more.

My dining companion’s favorite dish was an appetizer that was a three inch spicy tuna tostada-like affair under an inedible pyramid. If I had advice for the chef, I’d skip the weird spaghetti looking pyramid and just serve the tostada-it’s excellent.

Sake. That’s all that needs to be said really. I think they had more than 25 different sakes from which to choose. Our waiter’s recommendation, Chrysantemum, was too sweet and cloying for my palate, but our second choice which came in a blue bottle was excellent.

Thanks for creating a great place for me to bring guests when dining in Tacoma before plays. Eating at the Subway never really put my friends in the mood for entertainment.
