General : Mmmm.. Tequila
After much anticipation, Matador is open. We attended the pre-Grand Opening event this evening and were highly impressed. The food tasted amazing. The atmosphere is cozy and warm, but not too cozy. Maybe the good sipping tequila dulled my critical eye, but I think we have a winner.
Must sleep now.
Update: Photos and a lot more of a description of the evening over at the Spew.

Matador is an incredible place and right downtown (721 Pacific Avenue).
Here some photo gallery of the inside of a Seattle location to give you an idea of what it looks like. There are now three in the state.

It’s a Matador! (Been wanting to throw in that obscure reference.)
Seeing the detail and craftsmanship develop on the exterior and entryway over the last several weeks, I figured this place was going to raise the bar, so to speak. I’ll have to check out the innards, before it becomes the next “in” place. I hope its opening will help float the other nearby establishments that have been hanging on.

I’m so very excited about the Matador opening. I was a regular at the Ballard Matador when I lived in Seattle, so the thought of having a Matador walking (or stumbling!) distance from home is great!
If you haven’t been to a Matador, you have to give it a try. Their happy hour specials are really good, and the tortilla soup…mmm… yummy!

Hopefully, now that the Matador has expanded OUTSIDE Seattle, they’ll change their URL. No Tacoman wants to be part of Seattle. Despite the owners’ hard work renovating that space, I still think a one-story building is out of place downtown. Bring in the wrecking balls!

Some good timing for this article:
seattlepi.nwsource.com/food/291745_rest10.html
One thing I notice is that nobody is getting the address right. One the website it says Pacific Ave. N and in the article it says N. Pacific St.
I have been to the West Seattle location and can’t wait to check this one out.
Oh and from the competition via Forward Tacoma: Masa, a traditional Mexican restaurant and the second venture for the owners of Asado, is anticipating that they’ll open on Nov. 24 at the corner of 6th Avenue and Pine Street. Masa will also be serving food 24 hours a day on Friday and Saturday and offering breakfast on Saturday and Sunday.
sweet!

If the Matador isn’t a hit, I don’t know what would be. A few quick personal observations from an opening night visit: Noise hit me right when I walked in the door – I personally would like some more work on controlling the acoustics but that’s totally just me. The hostess and wait staff seemed pleasant and competent. One server at the next table did something baffling and completely wrong. However the good part is that the manager had a constant watchful eye, and corrected it right now. After we finished, the manager came by later and asked how we liked everything and if anything could be better – and she meant it. So they really seem to have a conscious desire to do everything right. There’s no dumbing down because “it’s just Tacoma.” Perhaps this will help Tacomans feel that it’s O.K. – we can expect quality dining, and I get a sense from the manager that they expect to deliver it. The décor was very nicely done. (I’m tired of the grinder-distresses metal surfaces that seem to be the trend in restrooms, but I wasn’t in there for the décor.) Coffee weak, but they know, and are working on it. The coconut ice-cream-thing was to die for. Those are going to be a couple killer blocks of downtown. Let’s move bocce to Fireman’s Park next year.

I went there on the opening night to the public and I loved it. Great interior, good waitresses (which is impressive for opening night) and most important excellent booze and eats! A great benifit to Tacoma. I hope that whole area of North Downtown can just take off. Some residental, and McMinimans down there woudl be huge. WE STILL NEED A GROCERY STORE downtown though, I think that is impeeding things!

I was at the Matador thurs night. It was a hip little place for downtown tacoma. I went with my girlfriend and two other couples. It was a nice place but I rather go to Asado, haven’t found a place in Tacoma that can beat that place yet. The drinks were good but the food was way too spicey 5 out of the six of us all said the same thing. And the bar is a little small. I guess thats why they have a non thirsty happy hour. Oh and then one of the staff told me they hadn’t had any of the dishes yet, not acceptable. But it was the opening prob try it again in a few weeks to give it another chance

A little late on this thread, but wanted to share my experiences anyway…
I stopped by with a large group for the early happy hour on a Friday. Plenty of people looking after our table, but the waitress was pretty new to waiting tables and had some minor overlooks/mistakes (spilled/forgotten drinks, poor timing).
Separately, five of us stopped in for another drink & some bites. Again plenty of staff, though our waitress was decidely anti-social and didn’t seem that happy to have us. We had fun anyway.
Food (from happy hour menu): Good soup & tacos. Hearty portion of nachos for the price. Quesadilla was a bit bland w/ flavorless chicken. (I guess I’m used to the PWay’s overloaded quesadilla.)
Overall, good atmosphere, decent food, good drinks, average service. I’d go back, but might wait a couple more weeks for the staff to get everything sorted.

The Matador is still coming up to speed. However, I would say they are about the hippest restaurant in Tacoma right now.
The craftmanship on the bar and custom metal work throughout the restaurant are difficult to beat. The only interior close in Tacoma is the Indochine.
We will see if the Mesa will pose any challenge when it opens.
