Exit133 is about Tacoma
Enjoy a Car-Free Ruston Way this Sunday
This Sunday Ruston Way will once again be closed to motor vehicle traffic for the annual Downtown to Defiance Sunday Parkways event. Cars and trucks will be banned from the waterside lanes from downtown Tacoma, along Dock Street, Schuster Parkway, and Ruston Way that day, making way for bikes, pedestrians, runners, roller bladers, unicycles, and pretty much any other human-powered form of transportation you can think of to enjoy closed roads and open foot paths all the way from downtown Tacoma to Point Defiance.
It's a peek at a vision for a trail to make that journey more permanently available. Imagine being able to bike from Point Defiance, through to downtown Tacoma, and beyond - maybe connecting to regional trails to Mount Rainier or Seattle. Imagine... Or show up on Sunday and experience a bit of that vision.
The annual event is free and open to everyone. It's seven miles from end to end, which makes for a DIY half marathon if you want to run the full out and back, or a nice distance for a (mostly) flat bike ride. And for those who prefer the water, kayak tours of Commencement Bay are a new option this year.
Activities along the route make this more than just a point-to-point event - all for free. Take a break to play a round of ping pong or croquet. Take a class in yoga, dance, or skateboarding. Kids games, activities, and learning opportunities will be offered at several locations, and a stage with live music will get going along the Point Ruston Waterwalk at 10 a.m. More on activities and locations here.
When you need to stop to refuel along the way there are plenty of options, including the fine dining establishments along Ruston Way, and food trucks too.
Want to help facilitate this event so everyone has a good time? It's not too late to sign up to volunteer. Shifts are available for half of the event - leaving you time to enjoy the rest of the day. Volunteer along the course, in the parks where event activities are taking place, or in a number of other ways. Volunteers earn a food voucher to be used at the food trucks. Sign up to volunteer here (you can even use the form to invite friends to join you as a volunteer).
The official event and activities last from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., giving you four hours to navigate all or a portion of the course. We're keeping our fingers crossed that the weather stays nice, and trying to decide between a nice long run or a leisurely bike ride... Maybe we'll see you out there.

P.S. Perfornance Bicycle out by the mall invites you to stop by their Downtown to Defiance kick-off party for a 25-point inspection, games, prizes, refreshments, and socializing.
