Food Trucks in Tacoma

We haven't talked about food trucks much in a while, but that doesn't mean we're not thinking about them...

Where can I find a food truck today?

We don't see a lot of food trucks out and about in Tacoma during the winter months, but one truck, Kerry's Caribbean Takeout, is braving January to show up at UW Tacoma on Wednesdays after the holiday break (and at Lakewood Auto Services at 12001 Pacific Hwy SW and JBLM on other weekdays).

The Kerry's menu features dishes native to the islands of Trinidad and Tobago, as well as Jamaica, prepared based on recipes "tried and tested and handed down ... from family and friends from the Caribbean."  Rumor has it that Kerry may have spent some of the holiday break in Trinidad learning a few new recipes, which could make for some fun new options. We hear he'd like to launch new menu items like Geera Pork Sandwiches, Jamaican Beef Patties, “Aloo” Pies (Special Potato Pies), and Cuban Sandwiches.

Find Kerry's Caribbean on Court C just off South 21st on the UWT campus on Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Keep up with them on Twitter and Facebook, or check out their website. If you like what you taste, they're also looking to do some catering this year.

Possible future food trucks

As we look ahead to the future, a little bird tells us that UW Tacoma is making more space to accomodate food trucks. Work continues on the green space just south of the newly opened University YMCA building at South 17th and Market. That green space, we hear, will ultimately include room for more food options. What will they be? We're not sure. What South Sound food truck would you like to see downtown?

We've also heard that a new website, now in early beta stages, plans to try to serve as a central hub of information on food trucks around Tacoma. Food truck owners will be able to list their trucks, locations, schedules, and contact information. FoodTruckTacoma.com is a little bare-bones right now, but when it fills in, it could be a good resource to support the food truck scene around here. Maybe you have a favorite truck - let the owner know they can get listed.

... and now we're hungry - who else is ready for lunch?
