Give Your Input on Plans For a New Point Defiance Aquarium
Changes are coming to the aquarium part of the Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium - and upcoming public meetings will give the public a chance to learn what's in the works and give their feedback to Metro Parks.
The new and improved facility, paid for uing 2014 voter-approved bond funds, is part of the new Master Plan for Point Defiance, the first in about a century. The plan includes the construction of a new aquarium facility to replace the exiting, and aging, 1963 North Pacific Aquarium facility. The details are still being finalized, and will be informed, in part, by public input, but it look like it will be a multi-level, 34,000 square-foot facility, featuring multiple species from the northern latitudes of the Pacific Ocean.
The new aquarium is expected to open in summer 2018.
Two meetings are scheduled for September 28 and 30, at which the public can learn about plans so far. At the board meeting on the 28th, there will be an opportunity for public comment.
- 5-6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 28 Metro Parks Tacoma headquarters, 4702 S. 19th St., Tacoma - Zoo officials and representatives from the architectural firm designing the aquarium, will make a presentation to the Board of Park Commissioners during a public review and study session. This meeting will include an open house for public viewing of drawings and other information at 5 p.m. and a board study session at 5:30 p.m. Members of the public who wish to share their views on the project may do so during the public comment period of the regular board meeting, which begins at 6 p.m.
- 6:30-8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30 Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium, North Pacific Aquarium, 5400 N. Pearl St., Tacoma - Zoo officials and representatives of EHDD will provide an additional opportunity for members of the public to learn about the new aquarium and ask questions about the construction process and timeline.
Both meetings will feature information about where the new aquarium will be located on zoo grounds, its size, and details about the various galleries of marine animals that will be included in the new facility.
