Imagine Tacoma – Olde Gift Shoppe #3

For that last minute shopping idea (you have until January 6th you know) – why not an interactive board game based on the popular Monopoly – only tailored to Tacoma with the ability for you to determine what properties are included in the game!

The board and property deeds are made from a marker board material that allows you and your game participants to decide WHAT and WHERE properties are placed on the board (and by placement, what value these properties are worth – ranking down counterclockwise from GO). Property Options for your consideration may include:

Avenues and Streets
Pacific Avenue, Broadway, Tacoma Avenue, Market Street, St. Helen’s through to Commerce Street and the Courts (A-G).

Institutions
Tacoma Art Museum, Museum of Glass, Washington State History Museum, University of Washington Tacoma, and Le May (or is it Le Might?).

Urban Spaces
Wright Park, Chihuly Bridge of Glass, Thea Foss Waterway, Pantages Patio, and the grande Tollefson Plaza.

Buildings
Union Station, Old City Hall, Murray Morgan Bridge, City Municipal Building, Rialto Theater, Hotel Murano to Park Plaza North and the Marriott Hotel.

Establishments
Meconi’s, Matador, Capers, SAVI, Bimbos, Black Water or Starbucks.

Or mix and match to make each game for a unique adventure.

Utilities and Railroads
These are established with Tacoma Power and Tacoma Water designated as the utilities with Sound Transit, BSNF, Amtrak, and Tacoma Rail included for the RR properties.

Change and Community Chest
These cards have been tailored to reflect past the present events in Tacoma – from the famous to the infamous – with updated card packs available on an annual basis (subscription charges may apply).

Tacoma ’Iconic’ Board Pieces
Genuine smelted copper pieces that represent Tacoma’s past and present – Tacoma Trolley, Racecar, Hot Shop, Chihuly Creation, Gas Tanks, City Hall Clock Tower and Steam Train.

So this year, rather than having the big altercation at the end of the game about who gets to purchase Marvin Gardens – have the fisticuffs at the start of the game about what properties are included in the game and where they should be placed! Welcome Yule!

Although this idea is ripe with sarcastic comedic potential, in complete seriousness I can’t believe someone hasn’t already marketed a Monopoly-like derivative based on Tacoma.  The Seahawks have one, for chrissakes!

Some ideas for Community Chest cards:

Asarco remediation check arrives in the mail:  Collect $500

Receive order from City to replace sidewalk pavers at your own expense:  Pay Bank $300

Rant unintelligibly at a City Council meeting and make an appearance in an edition of the TV Tacoma All-Stars: Move back two spaces

Run for sheriff, receive more than the margin-of-error’s percentage of the vote, get involuntarily committed to a mental institution shortly thereafter:  You win.  You are Tacoma.
