Monkeyshines 2016 - The Year of the Monkey

Before we get started - This is NOT an announcement that Monkeyshines has officially started. This is not an announcement that it hasn't either ...

That said, we know that a lot of people are looking and a several friends of the monkeys are already hiding little treasures. If you're looking, have stories to tell, or have questions, post them in the comments. If you have photos you'd like to share, please email them to us at tips @ exit133.com. We'll add them to your comment. Do you need some inspiration? Here are a few things to read while we all wait ...

And who could forget ...

We'll update and expand this post as we receive more information.

p.s. From what we hear, there are three different monkey stamps this year. One is the original from the first year. Two of them are new for 2016. However, the same rule applies - take only one. Happy hunting, Tacoma.

2nd Year Shiners

12th Man Sisters, after two hours of hunting, we were ready to call it a morning and then were suddenly surprised and so thankful to find one of your awesome creations.  Thank you!!

We also found two marbles and want to thank that person, too.

You all made these two very happy!

Grateful shiners....

Ms. Monkey, this is such an incredibly wonderful thing that you and your fellow artists do for our “little T- town”.... I call it that because this event has brought out the small-town bonds between so many of the Shiners met in the hunt.  Everyone asks, “Did you find any?” and by simply responding, “I found a little marble,” I’m met with genuine excited joy from the two adults and the two children asking the question, responding to my “find” with a very enthusiastic,“OH, GOOD for you!!!  Congrats!” And they mean it.  It’s sincere.  All over a little marble.  People are friendly, happy, and love sharing their find… or search.  Of course everyone hopes to be lucky enough to find an orb or medallion, but even when they don’t, it’s okay….  and is like meeting up with long lost friends.  When saying goodbye, it makes me smile to hear, “Happy Shining!!” and I enthusiastically respond with the same.  Thank you for facilitating an event, Ms. Monkey, (and for keeping it going!!!) that shows our children-and each other, the small-town warmth we are so capable of sharing together.
Happy Shining, everyone!

Grateful shiners...

We neglected to thank Marbleman, (without doubt!) and all of the others who add to the treasures we find—- like 12th Man Sisters, and the Octopus people who have previously joined in the fun of providing their art, too, and ALL of those who quietly do what they do, in whatever way, to make this event even more successful.  Just wanted to make certain that you all know how much your generosity means to this community.
And we love how this is all not publicized and marketed to the masses, but is shared more by word-of-mouth than by any other means.
Keep on Shining!

Last year was my first monkeyshines experience and I was amazed at how positive the experience was.  I had to participate.  This year is my first year contributing to the project and definitely not my last.  My buddy and I have distributed 50 photos taken from in and around Tacoma.  I hope you enjoy!

This was our first year of making and hiding art and the experience has deepened my love of the monkeyshine tradition. Our hunt produced several treasures for two of my daughters and many great memories. No “official” medallions or orbs sighted by this monkey…

Ran into a redheaded girl this morning who kindly said to me ” Can I make a suggestion? Hide something next year. It is so much more fun to give something than to find something. It completely changes the experience.”

I can’t quite figure out how to get the photos to upload but early this morning 2/8/16 I found what appeared to be an orb in the rose garden at point defiance. It seems that someone broke the medallion off of it. I’m not sure if the so-called smasher has already been out but I found it in a small tree in the garden. How can I submit a photo to see if this really is a monkeyshine orb?

What a beautiful morning to start my search!  I didn’t find any treasures, but I found some new little paths down by Foss Waterway that I’ve never noticed before.  Unfortunately, everything shiny or colorful hiding in the bushes turned out to be trash.  I have no art to share this year, but I’m going to bring garbage bags on the rest of my hunts and leave a cleaner trail behind me as my New Year’s gift to Tacoma.  Thank you Ms. Monkey and all of the other contributors who make this city feel so special!

Started looking the year of the pig after my husband read about it in the Sunday paper and I have search every year since!! I reschedule my days just to do this hunt but they are very hard to find. I have had a few dreams of finding them! After 3 days of looking one year I found a big clear cobra ball on the side of a road and it was from the year before, I decided to give it to my mom since she went with me at 3am and she can’t get around tacoma very good do to old age. My 5 year old son found a marble last year and one today after hours of looking both times we gave up looking and found them on the way back to the car. My son is in school now so he can’t look with me tomorrow for a glass ball and I only have a few hours to look. If I ever find another one I will re-hide it for him so he thinks he found it but knowing him he will probably give it to me since he knows I really would like one. Is there a map of an area to stay in so I don’t look so long in wrong areas Tacoma is huge and can I volunteer to hide them? After years of looking I have some great ideas for young ones, the elderly and walkers like me I think they should be more spread out at popular areas and timed only a few at a place every hour or so.

There isn’t a map, but watching where others have found them will give you an idea of where they’re popping up so far. They should be hidden in public spaces, in all parts of Tacoma. Places like parks, planters, benches, etc are good bets.

There are quite a few others hiding their own creations around town - clay and glass art, pictures, poems, and more. The monkeys love to hear that people are making their own contributions to the fun.

Happy hunting!

Saturday

I got up around five and searched until 6:30 with no luck. So just as I was about to give up and retreat, a guy pulled up to me, got out of his car and beckoned for my attention. It was dark so at first I was a little bit nervous, and thought that maybe he was lost or something, but then he said “We weren’t able to to make the hunt” which puzzled me at first. Then he went to the back of his car, pulled out a white, glass medallion with a monkey face stamped on it, and gave it to me! He said “Thank you for participating” before driving away. I wonder if he was one of the monkeys? Either way, he totally made my day. Thank you, monkey!

Went out with a group early and we searched the waterfront and Lincoln park area but it may have been to early.  Came home and then went out again and looked in a few parks and nothing. Went to Ailing Park and my group scored. Two Orbs and a pot and a few other things we left for others.  Monkeyshines has become a family and now friend tradition.  We have decided next year to hide as well as seek.  Now we are going for pancakes before everyone has to get off to school and work.

Went out very early to Wright Park with my daughters and husband. Walked around for awhile with no luck then someone told us about an orb in the middle of the fountain. After seeing another person try to make it through the water and hearing about another attempt, I decided to take the polar plunge myself. It was very cold but I succeeded with the cheering of my family and a few onlookers.  After being soaked from shoulders to toes another person told us about a blue bottle with a note inside again in the middle of the fountain on the other side. I was already wet so I scored another treasure for our family. Thank you to all those hunters that helped us find our monkeyshines. Thank you to Ms. Monkey and her friends who helped make this a special fun day that my family will never forget.

We are super hoping that our fifth year looking will be our lucky year for some glass! We have looked a little by freight house square and dock st. Husband found a rock painted like a ladybug, which is always really exciting to find some kind of treasure. We went out for a quick hunt before school today at vassault park. We didn’t find anything around the playground, but could see some teen boys running through the fog looking too. As we were leaving, one of them ran up to us and shared with me that he had found an extra treasure and hid it for us. My four year old was over the moon to “find” a monkey medallion today after her big sis found a 12th man sisters monkey yesterday. Thank you DEVON for your sweet spirit! You made our day and created a wonderful memory for my girls!

Thank you, Monkeys! Found my first Monkeyshine today! I spent the morning picking up trash around town with friends as we hunted, but I didn’t find anything (other than a lot of trash.) Then, on my way to class at UWT, I found a medallion on campus! Thanks to all of you who help make this event possible. It was a lot of fun to be out with friends and meeting other Monkeyshiners out there looking. I’m so happy to live in such a great city!

I have to be to work early every day this week so hunting will be limited.  I did a quick circuit this morning with no luck, but I did get energized for the day!  Then my wonderful husband let me know he found a monkey postcard leaning against a tree in Wright Park when he took his morning run! Having a wonderful time looking this year and love all the community involvement.

After 3 years of looking, Monkeyshine fortune found me!! I started out @ 6am, went to Pao’s for sweet morning goodness, grabbed a coffee, put on my headphones and hit a few back alleys, and some of Tacoma’s smallest parks. Finally, @ McCormick Park, in the fountain, there it was, bobbing and floating. I watched as several folks walked right by on their way to work. I didn’t even have to get wet!! Also found sunflower seed bomb @ Titlow.
Thank you to Ms. Monkey and all the shiners that make this event happen!!

I look every year, but it’s hard to do during a work day, just have my lunch break to hunt…  BUT, this year I decided to avoid disappointment by taking a trash bag with me. Everywhere I poke around, I pick up the trash. So I feel like I’m doing something worthwhile, and if I ever find a Monkeyshine, it’s a bonus!

I found a Lego monkey in Wright Park and re-hid it elsewhere in the park before continuing the search in Stadium district, where my friend and I found a ceramic monkey cup inside a pipe in front of Stadium High School. It came with a scroll reading “Revel in nature.” Searched the Washington Historical Society building down the street, where a couple other hunters found a scroll that said “Take a nap today” but no matching cup. We also saw a monkey barrel at Fireman’s Park but left it for others to find. Happy hunting, everybody! Seems to me the weather is always perfect for our lovely Tacoma tradition.

Found a “seed bomb” (sunflower) at Wright Park. We were walking our 5 schnauzers and noticed a woman acting strangely near a tree. I was suspicious of her activity until she explained Monkeyshine 2016 to us. What a fun idea but hard for us to search with the 5 minis. Loading the dogs up we found the seed bomb on an electrical box near my car. Now we are hooked!!!!!

What a day to enjoy Monkeyshines!

I saw someone else mention this, and thought about this last year, so I will suggest this again:

***            ***            ***            ***          ***
Monkeyshines was started as a selfless gesture of giving back to Tacoma.

Perhaps we can give back in our own way: by picking up trash as we hunt?

I hear that the Tacoma mall got surprised tonite by mall monkeys. Wild on the loose I heard.  As we watched our wild monkeys go and leave lots of treasures all AROUND the mall.  But once we wrangled all wild monkeys and took them home.  We realized we left ALL the monkey treasures still hidden for some special visitors. So go monkey around the mall stay safe.

This is my eighth year of searching, and I finally found my first-ever Monkeyshine! Found a beautiful orange medallion at 5:15 am in the mouth of a fish sculpture, in a (mostly drained) fountain on Broadway near the Pantages. My hunting partner and I then hid a few monkey-themed treasures he made to pay it forward a bit. Many thanks to Ms. Monkey, all her fellow ‘Shiners, and all the friendly Tacomans we saw this morning for making this town so great. Happy hunting, everyone!

My son and I were looking in Wright Park today around 11:30 when he spotted one floating in the pond about 15 feet from shore.  Another couple, a man and a woman, had spotted it before us and were waiting for it to drift in close enough to grab it.  The man stated that if I was willing to get wet it was mine for the taking.  I handed my son my phone and wallet and took the plunge.  A few minutes later, wet from the mid-chest down, I handed my 8-year old son a beautiful orb.  I didn’t get to thank the couple, who graciously passed on the orb, sufficiently for their kindness.  It is not every day that a Father gets to be his kid’s hero, but today was one of those days.

Thanks!

With so many people now contributing treasures to the Chinese new year tradition in Tacoma, what’s the rule for how many treasures to take? I was always told to only take one monkeyshine. Unless that rule doesn’t apply to other treasures. Just curious.

Personally, I take the “only take one” rule to heart.  One Monkeyshine (whichever variety it is), leave or re-hide the others - it spreads the joy of finding the shines out to many people over many days (weeks…months….years?)  Just my personal interpretation :)  Happy Shining!

Such a fun early day! Me and my fiance headed out at 330 and started at the Rialto, then covered most of the historic area down to Fireman’s park (finding nothing). We did some drivebys of several places, then I decided it might be a good idea to check over by the Museum of Glass. My suspicions were rewarded! I spotted this on the bridge that exits from the museum! (I was like “is this even happening right now?!!”) We even met some other fellow searchers who were absolutely ECSTATIC for our find! It was so fun! (Of course later I left my own treasure as well ;p) This is my first year hearing about Monkeyshines, and it was everything everyone said it was! The joy of just spending time in and around the city exploring new places, the camaraderie, and the spirit of giving back were definitely all apparent. ^.^ What an amazing city we live in! photo 2016-02-08 05.54.21.png_zpsrtveltdc.jpeg

Out early this morning, nothing in Wapato, then found a small glass magnet in a planter on 38th street in the International District—so excited, my first-ever—thanks, Ms. Monkey and friends! Later, breakfasting at the Hob Nob, our waitperson asked why we were out so early—she’d never heard about Monkeyshines, and when we explained, she said, “Oh, that must be what one of my customers left for a tip yesterday,” and brought out a beautiful multicolored medallion and a postcard—said she thought it was a prank, but then got really excited—another convert! We love the energy excited by seeing and greeting folks, sharing hunt fortunes and strategies, and saying good morning to the wildlife—-saw lots of birds and a racoon in Wright Park. Happy hunting, all!

I spotted quite a few of them around town yesterday, including a beautiful photo of the Tacoma waterfront; silk flowers; a “Dream Big” stone; and a “Celebration of the Monkey” medallion (left them for others to find since I found a glass medallion.) While at Wright Park on Monday morning 2 gals told us about “Monkey Shines”. We have since found 2 clay “sunflower bombs” to plant. I just LOVE the birds around my home and can’t wait to grow the sunflowers for them. I’m very excited but not near as excited as the girls who came running up to us at Gas Works Park, later that day, to tell us they had just hidden some “Monkey Shines” somewhere in the park! It was just darling!

Hi Anxious Hunter. No I don’t make the marbles. the larger art glass ones we had this year were donated by a well known glass artist and friend from CA that generously donated 2 doz for our special Tacoma Monkeyshines fun!  We also got donations ‘for the cause’ from as far away as New England and as close as eastern WA. :-)

Sorry for the late post but I found this beautiful monkeyshines floating in a pot at Reconciliation Park late Monday night(10:30). Thanks Ms. Monkey and everybody else that makes this great event possible, it truly is one of the most fun times of the year in Tacoma.

Another successful year hunting monkeyshines!  We had all but given up finding an orb this year but my husband persisted & after about 2 hours on day 3 of looking, he found a beautiful yellow orb tucked away in an uprooted tree down at the Chinese reconciliation park this morning. Thank you Ms. Monkey & friends for making this such a special event to look forward to every year!

This is my first year at this and its been so much fun!  I’m already thinking about what I can contribute next year as a rogue monkey!  Still searching for my first find.  Is the search pretty much over for this year?

If you can believe Naughty Monkey’s tweets (and sometimes you can’t but this one I believe) then there is still a lot of hunting to be done.

I think there are always treasures left undiscovered every year—haven’t heard stories this year but in the past, folks have sometimes found monkeyshines in obscure places or very well hidden that date from previous years. The guy who found a Year of the Dragon orb years later on the tideflats comes to mind. The search is never over but don’t get frustrated if you don’t find anything. Just be ecstatic if you do.

That may have been me. Two years ago(2014), found a year of the dragon orb. That one wasn’t even hidden in some super crazy spot either. Keep looking!
PS I haven’t found one this year and have spent probably close to 40 hours searching, logged over a hundred miles in driving and probably 30 miles of walking. Sure loving this city more and more and will be starting a blog/site dedicated to it soon!

Have fun!

The hunt got off to a horrible start.  Pre-tested flashlight with new batteries died Monday morning before I even got started.  Broke a toe stepping over my dog who flopped in the middle of the hall after searching Monday.  Tuesday I decided I could wear my new sneakers rather than my mud shoes - yeah ran into a ton of mud.  But my dog is enjoying the walks - its his first year hunting.  He has separation anxiety since my other dog passed in May.  So we went by the glass museum this morning (nothing) decided to stop by Wright Park this a.m. and saw some litter in the tree at the opening to the arboretum - that turned out to be a ceramic medallion with a monkey and chinese symbol on it.  Thank you monkey friend!  I love getting different things.

The monkeyshines are (still) out there.  I found a multicolor monkey medallion after work today around 5:15 PM at Brown’s Point. Keep searching!
Thank you monkeys for a great week that started at 5 AM Monday morning. I walked at least 20 miles total on my search.  The Monkeyshines event is a great reminder to Step. Away. From. The. Office. (in my case, the school counseling office) and get out to enjoy life, the outdoors, exercise, my family and magic. Everyday this week felt like Friday!

We can’t take credit for any of the ones I could find on Instagram—there must be at least three photographers putting things out. I don’t really understand Instagram anyway… is there a central location where you can view every pic that has been posted using it?

Found a beautiful orange float at the NE Tacoma view point today! We searched all over the north end of tacoma, as we were heading home we decided to make one last stop! It was the best decision we could’ve made! There still out there if you’ve given up, get back out and explore. We started at 4am and found the float at 8am! Thank you Monkey’s we appreciate what you do and now have a ram and monkey float, which is the start of a beautiful collection!

I wish they would say if all of the orbs and medallions have been hidden. After walking 40 miles in the last 5 days and coming home with multiple stories of orbs beinging hand delivered to people not even aware of Monkeyshines and many near misses at repetitive locations I am feeling the love for the hunt fade away. This has been an amazing event in Tacoma for many years but this year the orbs and medallions seem so unobtainable. But who am I kidding I’ll be out tomorrow and probably Monday :)

Monkey Friends

Monkeyshines are often hidden over the course of a week and we don’t announce when.

Monkeyshines are often found years later.

Monkeyshines are not a “treasure hunt” only for those who know about it.

They are a gift to the entire community created by dozens of local artists and are intended to be found in a moment of “serendipity”.

The spirit of Monkeyshines is exploring our community, making new friends and thinking about what you can give back.

A great reminder !  My daughter & I pounded the pavement for 5 yrs and always came up empty handed. We found ourselves keeping an eye out year round, and this gave us the incentive to get out and walk together!  This year we hid some treasures which was way more fun than we ever imagined.  We also found our first orb!  What a delight!
Don’t give up…Tacoma monkeyshines are mystical and should not be an expectation, but a sheer surprise.  Cheers!

Couldn’t help but get a little more exercise, yesterday, and go out with a friend who is still looking for an orb.  Started around UPS walking around campus a bit, then headed to a small community garden near by.  After my friend went in first, I decided to take a look around while he finished searching.  I found a ‘message in a bottle’ hidden in the back.  Luck is on my side this year.  After that, we looked downtown for two hours or so, without luck.  Spoke to a guy who was hunting with his lady, down by the First Interstate plaza.  They found a ball from last year, the year of the sheep.  Pretty cool.  After that, the rain really got going, so we went to lunch.  Good luck to all.

Hot Pt. Defiance Park and found a little plastic monkey and a marble. Thank you marbleman for the marble! Headed to Wright Park and was unsuccessful. Be careful at Wright, we were seeing and finding needles everywhere! So if you bring your furry friends be careful!

6:45 a.m- Eyes half open, heading out in the rain we stopped for a hot cup of “eyes open” and headed for Wapato Park on 72nd. At about 10-15 min. into our hunt we see something that is half covered with icky leaves looking like a piece of trash. And there it was. A glass blown cup! It’s so cool! Thank You Ms. MonkeyShine and all who have hidden objects around our great City of Tacoma.

I went to the Hong Kong grocer store and it was sitting there on a shelf had all the employees wondering where it came from they said that they don’t sell those cups. I proceeded to tell the story of the monkeyshines which they didn’t understand me to we’ll but they got a good laugh and they sold it to me for a dollar lol.

A belated thank you to the artist that left this for Monkeyshines 2016. I don’t know if it is part of the “official” objects, but I found it right as the Super Bowl was kicking off.
I left something behind in its place, but nothing as amazing as this piece. Thanks T-Town!

I messed up this year and got the date wrong….we’ve hunted everyday and my six year old always wells up with tears at the end even though I tell her it’s about getting out being together etc.yesterday we had a splendid family walk at the Rhody gardens. Did anyone find the monkeyshiners I saw at Wapato on Wed? I have a clay bowl so I left it where it was. A hint, it was by a small water feature there. I’m not on Twitter or Instagram so don’t know if anyone posted that they found on those sites. It was easy to spot so I hope it found a good home. Love the whole philosophy behind Monkeyshines, bless you Ms Monkey!
