Summer in Tacoma Means Plenty of Summertime Events

Summer officially starts this weekend, according to the calendar. According to the calendar of events, it's already been underway for a couple weeks. And there's more great stuff coming this weekend.

Friday you can play putt-putt at the Murano, or your choice of kid-friendly or cinematically-themed music.

This Saturday you can enjoy a little art Tacoma walking, running, cycling, or even skateboarding. Speaking of Skateboarding, an event going on down in Tollefson Plaza this Saturday might be worth stopping by to see the action. Alchemy Indoor and partners bring you Go Skate Tacoma, a celebration of skateboarding.

Alchemy Indoor aims to build a dry, safe, indoor skate park in Tacoma alongside an education and resource center for these youth skateboarders.  Our surveys have shown that they are over 8000 skateboarders in Tacoma Pierce County between the ages of 14 and 24 and that over half of this population are high school drop outs or in danger of dropping out.  We see this as a direct result of the lack of mentorship for these youth.

The folks at Alchemy want to support these youth, and help them channel their energy and potential in positive and creative ways. Sounds like a good mission. And it looks like it should be a good show, too.

Refuel your Saturday with a pig roast at the Harmon Tap Room in celebration of the Summer Solstice - which migh be a great way to recover from/celebrate one of those active events. And if you're feeling a little less active, there's arts and crafts, dance, and a makers' market to enjoy. And don't forget about Sunday's History Hike downtown.

It's a full weekend, and the summer is just getting started. Keep an eye on our calendar for upcoming events, and feel free to post your own.

The 9th Annual Wheels to Meals Bike Ride is this Saturday as well.  Come Join us and Fight Hunger From the Seat of Your Bike!
The annual fundraiser for the Food Connection is always fun. Choose from six rides through the scenic Puyallup Valley and surrounding area. The 2013 ride was one of the most successful yet—raising more than $25,000 for our emergency food programs—and we’re hoping to surpass that this year!
