Tacoma Link Expansion Plans Moving Forward, Opportunity for Public Comment

This evening Sound Transit will hold an open house to share with the public their progress on plans for extending Tacoma's Link light rail.

We know the extension will take riders from downtown Tacoma through the Stadium District and on to the Hilltop - and back. We know where the six new stops, and one proposed relocated stop will be.

Now Sound Transit has updates to share. The transit agency has finalized preliminary 30% design plans, and is ready to share them for feedback from the public at tonight's open house. Sound Transit will also discuss the process for public art to be included in the project, and next steps as the expansion moves forward.

A new video lays out a vision for a future made possible by the Link expansion.

The final design phase now underway will advance that 30% complete design to a full 100% complete. There are quite a few details still to be decided, including station designs, and how art will be incorporated. Sound Transit plans to take public comment on a number of issues throughtout this process, including on station naming, traffic and parking changes, station design including shelter and windscreen design, and artwork.

Simulations show what the new Link line could look like running through various parts of the expanded route - like this one between the two buildings that could become Tacoma's McMenamins campus.

Or this, of the light rail running through the heart of the Hilltop Business District.

Station designs will look pretty much like what we already see at existing Link stops, but there's room to reflect individual community character through design features and artwork.

Preconstruction work, including permiting, settling details of construction methods, and public outreach, could start in late 2017 or early 2018.
