Exit133 is about Tacoma
“Tacoma’s streets are f*cking sh*tty,” & other Prop 1 observations
Many of you have probably already voted, but there are probably quite a few who will be pulling out their ballots and voters' guides this weekend to make their official choices on the issues and candidates at stake this time around.
One of the biggest issues for consideration in Tacoma, and the one that has probably gotten the most ink around here is, of course, Tacoma's Prop 1. One of the more interesting pieces we've read on the issue came from Dan Rahe over at Post Defiance last week. Whether you've made up your mind on Prop 1 or not, Dan's piece is worth a read - if for no other reason than that we appreciate his willingness to candidly call it like he sees it.
The critics and the supporters of Proposition 1 are simultaneously vexingly correct. We are faced with an extremely unreasonable circumstance: Tacoma’s streets are fucking shitty, and any means of fixing a shitty situation is also going to be unreasonable and shitty.
It's true. Our streets are pretty bad. Bad to the tune of $800 million, and counting. We've heard the critique that this is a piecemeal solution. And the suggestion that the Fiscal Sustainability Task Force might come up with a solution. Dan addresses those points too.
The scale of Tacoma’s infrastructural damage and wear is so dramatic, a miracle is needed.
No amount of austerity recommended by the Fiscal Sustainability Task Force could ever add up to three-quarters of a billion dollars needed for street repairs. No amount of city employee pay cuts or service decelerations is going to give us $10 million a year in net revenue for six years. The Task Force recommendations will necessarily be “piecemeal.”
After considering the situation, and conceding the imperfections of Prop 1, Dan casts his vote on the issue with some reservations.
When I vote “yes” on Proposition 1, I will not do so confidently. But I can’t think of a better idea, so I will cast my ballot with the hope that things get better soon.
How will you be voting?
