This Weekend in Tacoma: Who Doesn’t Like Drinking For A Cause?

As many of you already know, Tacoma is a town filled with lovers of nature, small niche communities, and beer connoisseurs alike. So it should come as no surprise that this weekend I have found a way for you to partake in all three characteristics of what make Tacoma such a fantastic city to live in. So without giving too much away I would like to start by saying this Saturday is going to be bright and sunny, and you have no excuse to sit inside (even if you’re nursing a bad hangover).

Your choices for this Saturday’s entertainment include experiencing Tacoma’s newest up and coming District at the Hilltop Street Fair, drinking Hops for Tree Tops in downtown Tacoma , or commuting down to Tumwater for one of the last chances this summer to partake in an awesome beer festival. Furthermore, as I always try and do, I have supplied a fun Sunday event that will leave you feeling sober for work on Monday and accomplished for the weekend - so let’s get to the good stuff!

Saturday August 22nd

Hilltop Street Fair presents by the Hilltop Business District

As I said, this is a great opportunity to get out and see how far the Hilltop neighborhood has come in the last decade. The Hilltop now boasts an abundance of beautiful wall murals from local artists as well as the best pho restaurants in town, like Pho King (yes it is as fun to say as it is to eat). With this event you can watch live performances from the Working Class Theatre Group NW, enjoy live music from local bands in the area, and gawk at all the fancy cars parked down the road for the Hilltop Street Fair Car Show.

The fair will stretch along MLK Street between 9th and 13th street, so you know there will be plenty to do and see at no cost to you other than getting yourself there. Have your shoes tied, sunblock applied, and get out the door by 10:30 a.m., because the event starts at 11, and parking may be limited. Find more information on this event on Facebook.

Hops for Tree Tops! Presented by Forterra

As you can read from the title the idea is pretty basic – we will be drinking beer to support the next Green Tacoma Day, and in doing so making our community that much cleaner and more vibrant. Hops for Tree Tops will be special because with this event you get to enjoy frosty adult beverages at three local breweries while learning about the trees that keep Tacoma’s air clean; so as the title of the article states, who doesn’t like drinking for a cause?

The great part of this event is that the three breweries: Tacoma Brewing Company, Odd Otter, and Wingman Brewers will donate part of their proceeds to Forterra, and we as the community will be supporting local businesses that want to take a stand in making our local area better. For those of you that are interested in this fiasco you should be having your first beer at Tacoma Brewing Company by 1:30pm since the event begins at 2pm promptly. You can find more information on this event on our events page (you URL clickers can click this link: http://www.exit133.com/events/details/hops-for-tree-tops).

Tumwater Artisan Brewfest Presented by Visit Olympia

If you are looking for one last brewfest before the summer is over, and want to enjoy the sunshine while having an original Olympia beer, this may be the event for you. The Tumwater Artisan Brewfest has been going on for the past three years now, and seems to be gaining popularity with each year - which is a good thing! With 40 artisan breweries attending, lawn games, and other fun, this is sure to be a good time. For the price conscious, this event that will actually cost you money to get through the door, but if you register before the event, the tickets are $20 dollars - saving you $5. You can even buy a special package that will afford you the chance to stay “cool” in your own special fedora.

This event kicks off at the Tumwater Golf Course Driving Range around 1pm and should be finished around 8pm, or when the beer is gone. Find further information on pricing or details on this event on their website.

Sunday August 23rd

Jewelry Making: Ring Making Workshop presented by the Tacoma Metal Arts Center

If you are looking for new skills to master, or simply just want to kill time on Sunday, the Tacoma Metal Arts Center will be teaching students how to shape, solder, texture, and patina silver to create their very own rings. This would be a great event to take your girlfriend to, but careful you don’t send the wrong signals... In all seriousness though, this is one of the cool niche communities that everyone should be giving a chance, because who knows, you might find your newest passion or best friend in the process.

This event will cost you $45 plus the cost of materials which should be around $5-$10 extra. I really wish I had a Lord of the Rings reference right now, but the best I can come up with is you should be ready to build your very own “precious” by 10 a.m. Also, if you'd like more information on this and other classes at the Tacoma Metal Art Center, or directions to their facilities visit their website at tacomametalarts.com.

Thank you for reading my weekly blog! If you have any events that you would like to see on my board please send them to alan@exit133.com and I will be sure to check them out. Again, I really enjoy writing this for you all each week and would love some feedback on what you think.
