Wishing the Parkway Tavern the Happiest of 80th Birthdays

In case you hadn't picked up on it, we here at Exit133 love the Parkway Tavern. So we're thrilled to wish them the happiest of 80th birthdays this weekend. They'll be celebrating in style with a special outdoor beer garden, giant connect four (you know you want to try it!), music, magic, and new hoodies and growlers... oh, and beer (event info here).

The Parkway easily makes our list of favorite places. We've been meeting friends at the Parkway since we were old enough to drink, and we've lived in a kind of orbit of this epitome of neighborhood bars for nearly that long, moving from apartment to apartment to house. We won't say we chose our homes because of the Parkway, but it was certainly a big selling point.

In 2008 Esquire Magazine included the Parkway in their list of "best bars in America." No arguments here. There's the great location - walking distance for North Slope and Stadium District residents. Then there's the impressive, well-curated lineup of tap handles, with everything from this season's hotest flavor, to the more obscure; there's always something new to try. And then there are the people - a true Pacific Northwest blend of laidback and welcoming to all comers. For more on the history of the Parkway (both fact and folklore), TNT has a nice feature article on the Parkway in honor of this weekend's festivities.

Given the choice of venues, it's where we like to schedule work "meetings," reunions with old friends, and more than a few sunny afternoons on the patio. We have stories that go back to before the most rescent remodel - pool games with evolving rules, lively post-event conversations that somehow last until closing, even accidentally crashing the staff's annual holiday party upon returning for a left-behind credit card. The Parkway even played a starring role in one particular college paper.

We have many memories there (some clear, others vaguely fuzzy...), and we look forward to many more as our old friend turns 80.

In 1990 my wife and I rented a house at 6th and Yakima.  One night in August we decided to walk off a gin and tonic or five with a walk around Wright. On out way back we were beckoned by a raucous gathering at the Parkway. It was a five dollar cover for a wet t-shirt contest for MS. Not sure it was an MS sanctioned event, but a lot of fivers changed hands.

Last year my wife and I had the pleasure of meeting the crew and patrons at Parkway when we were visiting friends in the area. What an excellent and inviting tavern! I cant remember a more friendly manager and bartender than Sean. We hope to see you all again!
