COTW: Better Late Than Never

Our COTW last week (yes, we know it’s Monday) pushes the boundaries of our family-friendly nature. Plus, the shameless request for COTW challenged our sensibilities. Nevertheless, we’ll give it to Squid for his attempt to enlighten DavidS. Although Andrew’s follow up… never mind. We feel dirty.

: Not Always Pretty

COTW: Bricks, Steel, and Sea Life

This week’s comment of the week is a favorite for a few reasons. First, it provides us with a bit of imagery. It’s not all pretty, but it certainly paints a picture. Second, it provoked discussion. Little did we know that R.R. Anderson had so many opinions about architects. We don’t necessarily agree with him… but it definitely got a few folks thinking.

if by ‘wow factor’ you mean a building that looks like it was coughed up by a sea cucumber (read E.M.P.), then you can keep it.

I prefer buildings that are functional to human beings, and not some sadomasochist freak-job architect’s wet dream.

Why I could carve a better seattle public library out of a banana. The only difference is you’d want to clad my banana in titanium for no reason.

Oh my.

COTW: Tacoma's Great Big Care Bear

We’ve found ourselves quite enamored with those vaguely reflective comments – those comments where the writer and the subject somehow meet in the middle. This week’s Comment of the Week goes to Erik S for the following bit of cheese love:

Right now I feel like a great big Care Bear, shooting a rainbow-propelled bunch of flowers from my plush belly out across the blue(ish) sky. The flowers hang up on a low-hanging cloud, spelling out a message: “L-O-V-E”.

Happy today, Tacoma!

Wow. I think I just lost my appetite.

: It's Pretty Clear

COTW: We're Russell's What?

This week was a tough one for us. So many good comments. So many new voices. What should we do? We really liked many of your posts in the Crosscut/Russell thread. For example, the Seattle as big brother series has come up several times in conversations around town. Yet, it didn’t seem quite… something for this week’s COTW. So where’d we go instead? To Crenshaw Sepulveda…

… It is more important for Tacoma to know who she is than it is for Tacoma to worry about saving Russell. Tacoma has more to offer than being Russell’s bitch.

Tell us what you really think…

: No Bows for Me

COTW: Zoobilee? Huh.

The comments are so unpredictable. We don’t know your minds or how you get from point A to point B. When a story is published, what appears below it – from you – can be a bit surprising. I would not have predicted a link between Ask Sassy and Zoobilee. Our comment of the week won because of its… imagery. We’re like… Yeah, I see it. Oh… scary. Oooh… that’s not good. Melanie takes it. Here’s the part that got us:

Bridesmaid dresses are what they are. Be honest with yourself even if the bride won’t. Your opinions will only piss off the bride; your butt does look big with a 5 foot wide bow across it; and no, you won’t be able to wear it again (unless you are like half of Tacoma and pull that sucker out of the closet-where it belongs-to go to Zoobilee in July)…

: Sharing Is Good

COTW: Sharing A Hat... with a Tassel

Our comment of the week this week actually goes to two folks. Why? Because we couldn’t decide on another comment and we liked the quick two posts between these two. Was it particularly enlightening? No. But it made us smile. That’s all it took this week. So, R.R. Anderson and Marguerite take it together in a thread that focused on the headwear requirements of a certain fraternal organization…

R.R. Anderson

I would join if we were required to wear a Maroon Fez

Marguerite

RR, I think I would pay extra for the chance to wear a fez… I would like mine to have a tassel.

We’ll get serious again next week.

: Where Do You Eat?

COTW: White Tableclothes

This week’s comment of the week was a challenge. We really liked the stories from folks about how they found their rat balls. Yet, there wasn’t much to them. We simply liked the stories. Instead, we moved to the Villagio thread. There, it jumped from a specific post about one apartment building making progress to a discussion of affordability in Tacoma. In that thread, Pete Weikel from Stadium Bistro puts a few things out there for us to consider… and we liked that he said it here. Pete gets our COTW and here’s a snippet:

Among the wonderful, supportive, and progressive folks driving the new Tacoma train, there is an element that shoots arrows at anything new, upscale, or out of their provincial comfort zone. They make me grumpy. Business has to be profitable. Are there greedy business owners, sure. Are rents going up, of course. Do natural, organic, fresh ingredients cost $, yeah. I hear people who have never visited my restaurant say, ‘I saw the white table cloths and figured it must be expensive.’ It’s not, and we have table cloths only because I like them.

You should read the whole thread to get the context, but…

COTW: Yeesh

Finding a Comment of the Week the last two weeks has been a challenge for us. So many comments. Many good comments. A lot of good discussions … but nothing that stood out. There were only a few that we could recall quickly in our discussion. The snow thread made us smile. In the end, the one that stood out to us was this one by Andrew:

I’m not a big environmentalist or anything, but do people in this area just get a complete kick out of paving over patches of trees? Yeesh.

Did it prompt a big discussion? Not really. I think we simply liked his use of yeesh.

: It's About Authenticity...

COTW: The City of Medium-Size Shoulders?

We seem to have come out of the holidays and everybody is accounted for. We’re glad you came back after the holiday punch wore off.

Our Comment of the Week comes from a regular. It probably isn’t a surprise to you that it appeared in the graffiti garage thread. What we liked was its imagery and connection to the past and its desire to help us understand what makes Tacoma cool. Tressie gets our comment of the week.

um, kids, I think Tacoma has always been “cool”. What was cool was that it had authenticity and a carefree pluralist attitude. I tagged it “The city of medium-size Shoulders”. It was/is a working-class town with a few mini-moguls sprinkled in…

: Who Are You?

COTW: Your Lives are Interesting

The comments this week were sprinkled with glimpses of our readers lives. Sparkrobot’s shameless, yet somehow relevant, self promotion showed us his digs. And we didn’t really want to know Andrew’s taste in karakoe.

But, alas, it was the lovely Sassy McButterpants who won our hearts and our Comment of the Week with an honest missive about her Saturday nights:

As much as I would like to catch a basketball game and a romantical film with a nice feller, something tells me I’ll be home in my jammies by 6pm watching, the 7 hour BBC Miniseries version of Pride & Prejudice with my cat.

Sometimes we feel so close to you readers it’s scary.

: Look Out World...

COTW: More Than a Name

We had a lot of comments this week. As we poured through your various thoughts, we couldn’t quite decide which one we liked best. Yet, there was something in the comments that kept us laughing, wincing, and wondering… who is this? Who are we talking about? Sassy McButterpants. She (we hope it’s a she) arrived on Exit133 with a flourish and hasn’t slowed down quite yet. She first showed up in the Hotel Murano thread. Then she appeared in the TacomaHotorNot comments.

We hope she’s here to stay because that’s one killer moniker (we hope it’s a moniker) and her wit seems fast and strong enough to take on some of more opinionated regulars…

Welcome to the show!

: Happy Holidays!

COTW: Missing Tacoma

Reading your comments this week was much more fun than last week. Maybe it was the glog, Christmas cookies, and wine. Or maybe it was the addition of elves into our normal discussions. As we looked for a COTW, Grubedoo’s architectural recommendation caught our attention. And Squid’s Taj Ma-freaking-hal made our day. But, when we finally sat down to decide, it was the more serious and introspective comment that won our hearts. Lotac’s rumination on Tacoma is our comment of the week:

As I drive around my hometown and state this holiday season, I am constantly reminded of discussions on Exit 133. I see strip malls, car-centric cities and a lack of places “worth caring about.” In all of this, I also miss Tacoma. I miss the excitement of a new church coming into my neighborhood near Tacoma Ave. and I miss the chance to check out a multitude of neighborhoods, each with their own character…(continued)

COTW: Lodging Wizardry?

There were many good comments this week in several threads. It probably doesn’t surprise you that the Heidelberg hotel post was the most read thread this week given the particularly lively and colorful discussion. We thoroughly enjoyed seeing you all use every comparison to disgusting things you could think of, however, one stood out. This comment brought together such concepts as the First United Methodist Church, Hotel Concepts Inc’s Heidelberg plans, and the stonemasons in relatively short prose. The highlight for us? His interpretation of the name…

Hotel Concepts Inc???
Is there any more blatant way a company can scream, “We have generic ideas, choose us if you want to spoon feed yourselves into a strip mall utopia!”

Who said this? A quiet reader of Exit133. An occasional subject of Exit133. An infrequent commenter. Daniel Blue.

Now if only we could find a company that specializes in “Progressatecture.”

: Taking Action!

COTW: Feeling Empowered

Today’s comment of the week seemed to cause more friction in our office than any topic y’all talked about. We emailed, chatted, and debated. Yet, we couldn’t find absolute agreement. While one particularly opinionated editor (the one still in need of a haircut) thought Mofo’s call and response post in the Steph Farber interview thread deserved it, others didn’t seem to agree. They liked the softer gentler approach offered by DNI a couple posts prior. In the end… well you can see for yourself:

I say we all have an “Exit 133” empowerment rally. We can meet at one end of downtown, eat, drink and shop our way thru the city, end up at City Hall, and light candles to the good old days of a once thriving downtown….then burn all of our shopping receipts in protest that there’s not enough “action” downtown.

What’s the message? I think folks want some retail downtown.
