Community Walkability Grant

If you are interested in your neighborhood being bikeable, your efforts may overlap with community walkability.
Tacoma Pierce County Health Department is now accepting applications for our Community Walkability Grant for 2016-2017. Funded applicants will plan and implement policy, systems and environmental change strategies that support community walkability and physical activity.
Applications are due by 3 p.m. on Sept. 30, 2016 and can be found at http://www.tpchd.org/walkability

We hope to ensure that the environment doesn’t have barriers for active transportation. Here is some background information. Walking is good for you. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity each week for adults. According to the 2013 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, only 25.6% of Pierce County adults meet the recommendations for physical activity. Brisk walking is a familiar form of physical activity, which most people can do every day to reach recommended levels of aerobic activity. Walking reduces stress, improves lifelong health, and lowers the risk of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and stroke. Walkable neighborhoods benefit our health, the environment, our finances and the economy. They are safe, more enjoyable, inviting and thriving.
Is your neighborhood “walkable”? Walkable neighborhoods:
- Feel like a good place to walk and include elements like plants, street furniture and lighting.·
- Have quality paths or sidewalks.
- Include locations near homes that are easy to walk to.·
- Have safety elements including buffers to traffic (planter strips or on-street parking) and safe traffic speeds.
- Host a walkability audit with leaders in your neighborhood to examine the built environment and determine areas that need improvement.
- Share audit findings with decision makers.
- Implement community based strategies to improve walkability.
- Build Social Support- Create or join a walking group or neighborhood fitness program to increase your social support.
