Tacoma Link Fare Proposal Public Hearing
September 19, 2013 at 5:00 pm
Sound Transit is considering charging fares to ride Tacoma Link. If approved by the Sound Transit Board, an adult fare could range from $1 to $2, with lower rates for children, seniors and people with disabilities.
Your comments and suggestions will help inform the Board’s decision. Public comments are due by Sept. 19, 2013.
Tacoma Link is Sound Transit’s only fare-free service and has provided free rides since opening in 2003. Free fares are allowed by Sound Transit Board policy when it would cost more to collect fares than the amount those fares would generate.
Ten years later, that policy no longer applies. Tacoma Link provides about a million rides annually. Collecting fares now would generate revenue sufficient to cover collection costs and help offset operating costs.
This summer Sound Transit is meeting with citizens, community groups, social service organizations and other stakeholders to inform the community about this potential change, discuss potential impacts that collecting fares could have on low-income and minority populations, and to develop appropriate actions to mitigate those impacts.
The Sound Transit Board is expected to consider in late September whether to charge fares and if so, how much they will be. If fares are adopted, Sound Transit will not begin to collect them until mid-2014 or later.
