Re: Death to Clear Channel

RR,

If there was ever a time Tacoma needed an underground cartoonist it is now.
Your anti propaganda skills are needed more now than ever.

Tacoma citizenry are being visually bludgened from all sectors of the city through the many many billboards they have.

This was obviously a very coordinated effort with a legal action against the city filed last week.  Obviously it was planned a long time ago.  I am still trying to wrap my mind around the scale of the (Orwellian?) effort.

I have never seen or heard of anything like it.

This one is as disturbing as yours above.  They certainly make a strong case for banning billboards in Tacoma with their visual spam attack.

Re: Death to Clear Channel

So doesn't Clear Channel have contracts with the advertisers? I think they may have cancelled all of the contracts, posted their billboard spam, and August 1st they will comply with the law.

Or they will leave their spam billboards up until there is a court decision so us crazy bloggers won't boycott and picket the advertising businesses.

Re: Death to Clear Channel

I believe clearchannel is doing themselves a disservice by having so many of exactly the same sign in an area.  What stands out is the number of these billboards when they are exactly alike.  What we sort of tolerated in the past because of the varied images is now looking a lot like pollution.   Personally, when I saw the first billboard I though it was a slam on the Patriot Act.  I'm not sure if we want a company as clueless as clearchannel operating in Tacoma.

Some communities actually work better with billboards, take Hollywood.  Billboards are part of the landscape there and it is to those portrayed on the billboards a status symbol.  Hollywood billboards tend to be more interesting than the ones we see here.  I think I've mentioned it before, why is advertising art painted on the exterior walls of old building compelling and billboards are not.  Is it just because the old painted advertising signs have some artistic and historical value?  It really is the same thing, old spam, new spam, it is still spam.

Re: Death to Clear Channel

Grit city reports on more billboards and google maps the locations of the billboard spam.  They even have pop up address locators and pictures.  Nice work Gritcity.

Conclude as you will on their billboard dispersion pattern they have used on the city.  I sure there is some methodology they have used.

The billboard law was passed 10 years ago by an earlier city council to regulate the placement of billboards in the city.  Not all of Tacoma's billboards are non-conforming, just some of them.

Re: Death to Clear Channel

Seems to me that this billboard issue is more about zoning than anything else.  If an area's zoning permits billboards, then they should go up, and that should really only occur in commercially zoned areas.  As opposed to outright banning billboards, which are a viable form of advertisement, which drives commerce, and commerce is the focus of commercial zoning, why not look at what is and what is not permitted in City's Commercial Zoning code and make amendments there?
I think taking down ALL the billboards is a mistake.  Non conforming billboards should go. Where they are should be controlled.  I think this can be accomplished through zoning amendments and active code enforcement.

Yes.  Our city's laws dictate that all non-conforming billboards be removed by two days ago.

The companies that have owned these blights have had 10 years to prepare, shift their advertisers to other means (dear goodness right it's CC, they have other places for people to advertise).  Their advertising contracts, if above board and proper, must have mentioned this someplace to their advertisers.  Not to say CC pointed it out to them, but it had to be in there as a protection to CC on that side of things.

So, I have little sympathy for them on a legal, moral and corporate standpoint.

Re: Death to Clear Channel

more awesomeness.  story is picked up by Billboard Liberation Front! http://www.billboardliberation.com/

Billboard Liberation Front wrote:

Clear Channel, the BLF patron saint, has taken a bold stand on free speech in Tacoma Washington with their CONSTITUTIONS MATTER {sic} campaign, we here at the BLF was not aware we had more than one. We applaud CC taking a moment to not look at the bottom line and think of the little people, their clients. The City of Tacoma gave Clear Channel a mere ten years to take down billboard considered too big or too ugly, why didn’t they just stand in front of the CC headquarters and demand, “you kids get off my lawn!  A billboard too ugly, surly you jest.

Well the patriots at Clear Channel aren’t going to stand for such blant attempts the squelch their clients God Given Right(R) to promote the latest soaps and beers and in the great spirit of Thomas Paine used their billboards to demand great freedoms for the huddled masses of corporations who have but no other voice to sing the triumphs of packaged muffins. When asked about the campaign, Tacoma City Councilperson responded, “Clear Channel cares about the constitution? Who the fug* do they think they are, ATT?

previously: The story was picked up by Mr. Skaggs!

Re: Death to Clear Channel

Spotted Proctor, North bound just after metropolitan market:

"Sic Semper Tyrannis"  and the title of this thread on one of the signs.  No camera, sorry.  Pics when someone else posts 'em.

Translation for those of you without your Latin glasses (r) on: "Thus Always to Tyrants"

It's Virginia's motto.  From the Wiki:  "The Seal of the Commonwealth of Virginia shows Virtue, sword in hand, with her foot on the prostrate form of Tyranny, whose crown lies nearby"

Another heading west on 26th, above the pet and garden store, has the title of this thread.

Re: Death to Clear Channel

You know how natural gas companies add a bad odor to gas so that we can be warned of the dangers of inhaling it? Clear Channel has done just that. They added so much red, white and blue to outdoor advertising that now we all are alerted to the visual toxicity of the corporate voice.
Thank you CC for finally adding the warning label.

Re: Death to Clear Channel

Nice metaphor Claudia.

Others have complained that why should we care about billboards when we have drugs and gangs etc.?   Well my observation is that drugs and gangs take over when people don't give a crap about what is happening outside their homes.   People don't care in part because outside isn't worth caring about when  outside is one giant commercial advertisement.   People skip over the commercials on TV...  outside it to valuable to skip over or write off as 'not my problem'

It is everybody's problem.   Our people are dying for this absurd country so we might as well start giving a damn about the quality of our meat space (you know the big blue room without the flat screen plasma tv)!

From the Clear Channel Outdoor Website:

"Outdoor advertising is great because you can't turn it off, throw it away, or click on the next page. That means your message is reaching consumers everywhere — all the time, everyday."
