Family Friendly Tacoma

This topic has come up in a few places recently, I thought it deserved its own thread.

What are some of your favorite family-friendly dining options?

We have had particularly great experiences at Cafe by the Bay, Ben Dew's Clubhouse Grill, Del Brocco's Pizza, El Toro, The Little Park, North China Garden, The Ram, and practically every teriyaki place we've tried.

Every parent probably has their own criteria for what makes a place family friendly, here are some of mine:

Speedy attentive service, especially bringing the check promptly
Quickappetizers for the kids
Affordable children's meals or liberal sharing policies
Child-friendly drink cups
Booth seating or sheltered corner tables and hostesses who seat families at them
High chairs
People who seem genuinely happy to see us there

So, what is your criteria and where does your family go?

Re: Family Friendly Tacoma

Thanks for starting the new thread.  I have to go back and read my own posts to remember what I said.  I have to tell you though, as you were the second person to say such good things about CAFE BY THE BAY, I finally went there last week and wish I had much earlier.  They gave us Coloring books and crayons before we even got to our table.  They were unheard-of flexible with offering to split portions, or modify them in any way at all.  Plus a toy goodie before we left.

O.K.: I don't want to stay on-line too long right now, but in no particular order, here's what comes to mind off the top of my head.  The list changes a little as they get older.

I remember recommending the ANTIQUE SANDWICH CO. for it's good food and juices and play-area stage (except open-mike Tuesdays).  But it has been a mainstay for me many years B.K. and I've been able to witness the owners' kids grow up.  Ditto on every Teriyaki place.  And we like WENDY'S II on Tacoma Mall Blvd., and LE LE's.  E-9"s good when we have the right server.  Heck, even the lounge (lower-level) at JOHNNY'S DOCK.  They do have a kids menu, but really, we only go once a month to hear Maia Santell sing Jazz/Swing with her band.  She loves kids, and we love the jazz.  KICKSTAND CAFE is always a good stop for us.  I'm almost afraid to say this, but the JAVA JIVE can have under-age from 8 to 9, and they have Otter Pops.  We have stopped in once or twice in the past when they open, before people actually show up.  CORINA'S BAKERY for an occasional sweet.  PEGGY's CINNAMON ROLLS at Freighthouse Square.

Great list of criteria by the way.  Mine's pretty much the same.  As they've gotten older, some of the criteria drop-off.  By taking them out early and often, I believe it better-developed their maturity for eating out and has made it easier and easier.  I can't think of any criterion to add.  Crayons and coloring gives them extra points though.  Your fav's give me a few months of exploring.

Re: Family Friendly Tacoma

I cannot get into that thread on Ed's Diner right now.  It's like it's been hand-crafted to bait me, personally.  Since I know that's crazy-talk, I need to stay out of it.

I am trying to put my energy into constructive conversations right now.  Wendy's II and Paddy Coynes sound right up my ally, I'll have to try them.

Re: Family Friendly Tacoma

Wow, some good comments on Ed's thread, but oh man, a few completely idiotic ones.  I'm chompin' at the bit, but better not either.  But I did read it and Pacific Grill just got added to the top of my to-do list.  I’ll try Paddy’s, too.  If Wendy is at Wendy's (and she usually is) she's really friendly, and obviously a great business person.  The kids like the stuff in the display cases and the rolling-ball Buddah fontain.  We like to sit by the fountain at Le-Le's, too.

Re: Family Friendly Tacoma

My two cents, errr, three kids' worth ...

Rosewood Cafe -- Friendly folks, small place, kid menus (that are even healthy!!! my kids always choose the picnic plate, which consists of slices of cheese, a baguette and fruit -- shocks the heck out of me), and, of course they have excellent grownup food (and wine and beer), too. And dessert options for all -- I highly recommend the Chocolate Pot du Creme, and you really don't want to have to split it, no matter how good you're trying to be.

Renaissance Cafe -- kid friendly food and staff, they're patient with you -- just be patient with them. Plus, it's right across from the history museum an bridge of glass, so it's a great spot to grab grub before or after taking munchkins to the history museum (quite surprisingly kid-friendly), the Museum of Glass (my 6-year-old has been obsessed with it since she was 4), wandering the glass bridge (they all love that), riding the Link, etc.

The Spar (coffee shop side) -- It can get crowded if you're there at prime dining time, but there are coloring books and leggos and some other kid stuff, and a kid menu, and you can still order all the pub grub AND get a beer, or some awesome coffee.

Antique Sandwich Co. (of course) -- Who can argue with that stage full of toys.

The Ram -- They even have activities for the kids in the waiting area. And they can pick a prize on the way out, too.

Happy Dragon -- My kids love Chinese food, esp. the sweet and sour chicken.

The Harvester -- Good, fast, inexpensive kid-friendly grub and a kid-friendly staff and location.

And ugh, the eldest adds Red Robin, for obvious reasons. But I should also mention here that she refused to go there on her birthday because of the obnoxious "annoying" songs. So we stayed home for birthday dinner and she made us sing nursery rhymes (Mary Had a Little Lamb, I believe) instead of "Happy Birthday." So I wonder how much she REALLY likes it ...

Re: Family Friendly Tacoma

We need to go back to the Rosewood.  We've only been there without the kids, I think they would really dig the picnic plate.  I liked the Renaissance, the owner was really cool about sharing plates.
