The Exit133 Forum is going into an ongoing offline maintenance mode while we take care of a long series of upgrades, updates, and code changes. You can continue to read posts, but we've disabled the creation of new posts or replies. We'll be back at full speed ... in May.
We apologize for the inconvenience.

I remember.
I remember when there was little activity in Stadium or downtown and it was quite a bit rougher. No Black Water Cafe for coffee. Wright Park was a grassy detox center of sorts. Stadium Thriftway sold an assortment of food "staples" and had a security guard much of the time.
The Temple of the Bean was about the only independently owned coffee shop around, a small alcove right above what is now a tattoo parler in the Stadium District.
I heard it got broken into a number of times and finally shut down.
Now I see that someone is fixing the place up. Don't know what it will be or even if it will sell coffee. Hmm. We could potentially have Kickstand (now One Heart Cafe), Corina's Bakery and the Temple all offering coffee very soon.
Update:
I was informed today that Temple of the Bean was open from 1990 to 1997.
Update Update
Temple of the Bean has now re-opened at Satellite Coffee at 817 Division. Their first day was 11/15/2007.
They now have a Myspace Page

I see that they are still working on the space. It would be great to see a coffee place in there again. And with a Supersuckers connection as well!

Anyone have an opening date?

They are continuing to slowly work on the Temple of the Bean former space. The latest news I have located is from March. Still, a coffee shop is planed but perhaps with a different name:
Rontrose Heathman, guitarist for the self-proclaimed "Greatest Rock 'n' Roll Band in the World" the Supersuckers will be co-owner of the coffee shop opening soon above Supernova, in the space where the Temple of the Bean formerly brewed. More details later. — Jake de Paul

(hmm. don't remember it looking like this)
I found the below information as well about the Temple. Make what you will of it. I only excerpt the G rated portions. Not the normal press release one anticipates from the opening of the new business downtown. Yet there is a tidbit about the Temple:
READ THIS, lern somethin!!!! I used to be BADguy. Now I am goodguy, however, people all have their own idea of what I am. I am definitely OVER worrying about public opinion. I used to do it ALL. Used to be all about the water solubles,
...
I made a garage into a pimped-out bachelor pad. There are pictures to prove this. I have a shop, SUPERNOVA, we tattoo people and stuff. You can get your hair all badass there, too. I am now making a coffee shop called SATELLITE COFFEE with Ron Heathman(Supersuckers) and Kevin Dolliff(Number 3 barista in the state) and Stumptown Coffee Roasters(look out Vivace, Vita, Victrola, Stumptown is in Seattle now). Its gonna be yummy. Maybe the yummiest ever. Stop by. Its where Temple of The Bean used to be.

Update 9/15/2007
Here's the recent pictures of the soon to be opened "Satellite Coffee" at the legendary "Temple of the Bean" location. I can only hope they have good coffee. They used to be the only game in town.
From my conversation today with some of the tenants in the building opening day is scheduled for October 1, 2007. We will understand if it's a bit delayed.
In the Temple's days, any thought of life downtown was but a flicker of hope shared in this remote outpost in hushed and huddled whispers.
Although it made a valient effort, the Temple outpost ultimately failed in its effort to hold the line. The Temple was broken into repeatedly and was eventually shut down.
Fortified with a new door with multiple locks, hopefully it can hold its own now. Also, the neighborhood is a bit more stable and Wright Park is increasingly being utlized for its intended purpose (as a park). Small businesses like this are leading the effort to bring life back to our fair city.
(Check out the Flash Gorden Ship on the front door.)
Godspeed Satellite Coffee! Take your place among Tacoma's small independently owned coffee shops and arise from your ashen slumber.

I am soooo looking forward to this opening! As awesome as Stumptown is, I wish Satellite would go with local guy AJ with Valhalla Coffee. He can help create a special one-of-a-kind blend that would be much fresher than something from Portland, plus he delivers!

"Fortified with a new door with multiple locks, hopefully it can hold its own now" - Maybe they should take George Carlin's advice. He says: I have six locks on my door, all in a row. When I go out, I lock every other one. I figure no matter how long somebody stands there picking the locks, they are always locking three of them.
Who knows - maybe that could work for Tacoma -

It will not be the old Temple of the Bean but how can this space not be a coffee shop? To me it is an Opera Alley sort of thing. Great use of an interesting space. I get this feeling, though, that about the percentage of people that claim they drank at the Temple of the Bean is about the same as baby boomers claiming they were at Woodstock.

Today, just before dark, and less than two weeks before Halloween, I was able to enter the Temple of the Bean for the first time in over a dozen years. It is almost renovated now as Satellite Coffee.
They were training on making a perfect coffee Rossettas and had a slew of digital images of them. They mean business. Great finish work and crown molding. They are well aware of the high expectations for the former Temple.
They are going to use Stumptown Coffee out of Portland. http://www.stumptowncoffee.com/

Here's one of their high tech corner light. Space is at a primium.

I'm excited to see this place open. Tricky's Pop Culture Emporium downstairs is a lot of fun, too. The neighborhood by Wright Park has so much potential, I've always thought it was weird how little there is around there.

Hi. Ron here. I am one of the owners of the Satellite Coffee Co. (orange hoodie, tired smile) as it is now called. Thank you Erik for dropping by yesterday. I guess one thing I want to make clear for everyone is that we are not trying to re-create the Temple of the Bean. There is such a myth surronding that place that no matter what we did we would fail. It is the same building though so I am sure some ghosts remain and Kevin ouir head barista and manager woked at the "bean" for years so we do have some connection.
Our goal is to simply raise the bar here in town and finally have a destination coffee shop that rivals or beats not only anything in this town but in Seattle or anywhere else. The level of sophisticaton that we intend to provide when in comes to the art of coffee does not yet exist here. To that end we have secured Stumptown as our roaster. They are not local I realize. If there was a local roaster that even came close I would have considered them. I will not go on too long about Stumptown except to say that we are grateful that they accepted us into their program as they turn down over 90 percent of the places seeking their coffee. They are picky!!! and it will only be to your benefit. Stumptown now has a cafe and a roastery in Seattle so the coffee will be fresh (even if it came from Portland their hairbender espresso blend takes a couple of days to outgas). Better coffee simply does not yet exist anywhere (I also play in the Supersuckers and have traveled extensively in Italy and we will hands down beat any cup I have had over there as well). I am a coffee geek!! I love it! We will feature only french press coffee in our press pots. We will have pots that will be self serve and the variety will change daily. No drip coffee ever! We will also have a limited number of varietals for resale that we can grind for you if you wish. Keep a eye out as we are finally getting close to opening. Should only be about a month now. If you see us up there working we may even have a cup for you to try! Thanks for all the nice words here. This has been a extreme labour of love and stress. We hope that we will give the neighborhood something it can be proud of and can really be stoked to wake up to!!

Nice meeting you Ron. We look forward to Satellite Coffee Co opening. The Stadium District certainly could use a good coffee shop there.
Our goal is to simply raise the bar here in town and finally have a destination coffee shop that rivals or beats not only anything in this town but in Seattle or anywhere else.
New businesses take alot of bravado to keep going. Looks like you have a good amount and have set the bar pretty high.
With the extensive renovations of Wright Park, visitors are going to appreciate an adjacent coffee shop. I can only hope they Satellite knows how to make foam for cappucinos.

Thanks for your support Erik. Tone is hard to judge in when reading posts. I guess excitement is more the tone than bravado. I could see how it could be taken that way. Not the intent. We really are excited to bring something to not just the neighborhood but all of Tacoma. I think that we are all confident that we can bring the level to a new high but ya'll will be the judge of that. I think that it is nice that we have had a few good coffee shops open in the last couple of years (Metro, Blackwater). This town deserves it. We only want to add to that and hopefully make everyone work a little harder (ha ha). Like I said we are geeks and take this coffee thing seriously. We could have settled on much cheaper coffee but why skimp on that when opening a coffee shop? No milikshakes here. Cappucino foam no prob though. Cheers!

Yay Stumptown! I've had it in Portland and it's super delicious. They were also featured not too recently in the NYTimes for their "obsessive" buying practices:

If there's one thing Tacoma could borrow from Portland (aside from mass transit) it's their coffee and foodie culture.

Glad to hear that the Satellite sees the Blackwater and Tacoma's other good coffee places as allies in the quest for more good coffee and good hangouts. Stumptown coffee's great, but Valhalla coffee gives it a run for its money, and it's locally-roasted to boot. Anyway, it'll be fun to have another good, non-corporate coffee option in town.

Wow, i remember the bean.
I wasted countless hours of youth in that place when Rex owned it.
Its good to see you've done away with faux marble walls.

Ok, it is official. We are open for business. Please stop by and check us out. Our hours are 6am to 6pm except Sat and Sun we open at 7am. We still have a few kinks to work out and have no signage up yet. Please spread the word that there is one more non-corporate coffee option in Tacoma. If you would like to read more about our coffee please go to stumptowncoffee.com. We will have a website up soon and will be doing weekly cuppings starting in December. Come to the cafe to find out more info. Thanks for all the support and kind words about the shop. It came out nice! Cheers
