Employer Opportunity Available to Participate in Summer Jobs 253 Program

The Summer Jobs 253 program is seeking interested employers in Tacoma and the surrounding area to host students as part of the paid internship program.

The program, which is in its fourth year, provides employers the opportunity to partner with City of Tacoma, Tacoma Public Schools and the REACH Center to offer Tacoma incoming junior and seniors up to 96 hours of paid work experience.


This year, 28 employers have already signed up to employ 73 students this summer. The program is still looking for employers to host 127 more students.


The program pays the students’ wages through a combination of City investments, grant and sponsorship funding and a $700 employer contribution for each intern.


“This is a great opportunity for businesses to make an investment in the workforce of the future to ensure regional and global competitiveness, and help students build their resumes by offering quality work experience,” said Christopher Wright, Summer Jobs 253 program manager. “Participating employers often hire their interns beyond the program.”


The program was recognized earlier this year by the White House during its “Champions of Change” event, which included representatives from 25 cities focused on employment and learning opportunities for youth during the summer.


Students who participate in the program build essential workplace etiquette skills, resume and interview skills, financially literacy skills and can earn up to two high school credits in addition to the work experience employers provide.
