How Vista, California, Became the Capital of Craft Beer

The San Diego suburb of Vista, California is a national destination for beer afficianados. The town with a population of under 100,000 has 12 breweries, with more coming. The industry generates 850 jobs and $272 million in revenue annually in San Diego County, and indirectly supports other jobs and businesses.

Vista encouraged the growth of its craft beer industry by understanding and responding to industry needs, like changes made to allow tasting rooms in industrial areas. Vista breweries have a few other things going for them, including the town's location, rules that accomodate food carts, and a robust brewers guild.

A good number of breweries now call Tacoma home, and we've seen collaboration on projects like a collaborative brewing project last January. We've even got a historic Brewery District looking for development. Are there lessons to be learned from Vista that could make Tacoma the beer capital of Washington?
