Parts of the ferry Kalakala find new home in Seattle

The Kalakala is now dismantled, never to be fully reassembled. But it's not completely gone. Seattle restauranteur Gerry Kingen will be preserving some significant pieces of the historic ferry.

Kingen plans to assemble the pieces - including the wheelhouse, the rudder, and the 30-foot long crank shaft - into a kind of walk-through public art installation near Salty's at Alki Beach, which he owns.

It's not exactly putting the Kalakala back on the water, but this seems like as close as it's going to get.
