Rail Workers Raise Doubts About Safety As Oil Trains Roll On

With more and more trainloads of oil passing through Tacoma and the surrounding region, questions of railroad safety seem more important than ever.

So it's a little unsettling to read a report that reveals a culture at BNSF - the only long-haul railroad moving oil through the Northwest - that seems to value speed and profit over safety. The report details workers pressured to skip safety protocols, brake and rail failures, increased accidents for oil trains, and retaliation against workers reporting incidents and concerns.

The railroad continues to upgrade infrastructure, and the report does say that rail safety has improved overall, but is that enough to make you comfortable with the daily trainloads of oil rolling through Tacoma?
