The Best Pot-Runner Washington Ever Knew is Headed for Scrap

We had heard that an old ship called the Helena Star had sunk down on the Hylebos recently, and that it was slated to be removed and disposed of. What we hadn't heard was the back story.

Apparently the Helena Star had quite an infamous past before coming to rest in Tacoma. She was seized in 1978 with 37 tons of marijuana on board (worth more than a quarter billion in today's dollars). That amounts to the largest haul of illegal pot in the region, and one of the largest in the country.

The little old ship (built in 1947) has been quietly falling apart since then, and her more distant past is still a bit mysterious...
