Use of Public Transit in U.S. Reaches Highest Level Since 1956, Advocates Report

An American Public Transit Association report says that in 2013 more Americans used public transportation as an alternative to their cars for trips within metropolitan areas than in any year since 1956.

That seems like a significant number, but what's the story behind it? This latest report challenges the idea that commute choices are tied more or less directly to gas prices.

The APTA president calls it a "fundamental shift in how people are moving about their communities," and he draws a connection between investments in transit and positive impacts on unemployment rates.
