City Observes Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Birthday on Jan. 20

Administrative offices in the Tacoma Municipal Building complex (747 Market St. and 733 Market St.) and in other City of Tacoma facilities will close Monday, Jan. 20, in observance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday.

The City's landfill, recycling center and household hazardous waste facility (3510 S. Mullen St.) will open as normally scheduled on Monday, Jan. 20, from 8 a.m. - 6 p.m., and garbage, recycling and yard/food waste pick-ups will not be affected.

Police and fire personnel will also be on duty, and animal control personnel will be on duty on Monday, Jan. 20, from 8 a.m. - 8 p.m.   

Following is a list of other closures and service adjustments relating to the upcoming holiday:

  • Senior centers (415 S. 13th St. and 5016 A St.) will close on Monday, Jan. 20.   
  • All of the Tacoma Public Library's branches will close on Saturday, Jan. 18. They will also be closed on Monday, Jan. 20, as per their normal schedule. 
  • The Tacoma Municipal Court (930 Tacoma Ave. S) will close on Monday, Jan. 20.    
  • There will be no parking enforcement by City staff on Monday, Jan. 20. 

In addition to free holiday on-street parking throughout Tacoma on Monday, Jan. 20, as well as free year-round garage parking at Freighthouse Square (2501 E. D St.) which provides easy access for visitors to and from downtown Tacoma via LINK light rail, there will also be signage and personnel directing those attending Tacoma’s Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Celebration at the Greater Tacoma Convention and Trade Center (1500 Broadway) to designated complimentary parking stalls that will be made available on a first-come, first-served basis at:

  • Greater Tacoma Convention and Trade Center (1500 Broadway) 
  • Pacific Plaza Garage (1125 Commerce St.)  
  • Park Plaza North (923 Commerce St.)

The 26th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Celebration at the Greater Tacoma Convention and Trade Center will broadcast live on TV Tacoma starting at 11 a.m. 

TV Tacoma is available on Channel 12 in Tacoma and Channel 21 in Pierce County, except in University Place, where it’s on Click! Channel 85. Those outside the TV Tacoma viewing area can check into the event at tvtacoma.com.
